Ways to Deal with Stress and Live a Healthier Life

January 29, 2019

We are all stressed every now and then. Stress can be induced by a wide variety of things that we can’t always control. All that we can control is to know which ways to deal with stress are ideal for us so that we can live a happy, healthier life.

Over the years, stress becomes an unavoidable part of our lives. However, what is stress really? How does it affect us? And can we prevent it from happening?

The answer is, yes, we can. However, before we discuss some effective ways to deal with stress, let’s consider what stress really is.

What is Stress? What Causes Stress?

First and foremost, before we think about ways to deal with stress, we have to realize what stress really is. Stress is explained as a physical response to something we experience. When you are stressed, your body is alerted, thinking you’re under attack and switches to ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ mode.  On top of that, your body is releasing a bunch of chemicals and hormones like adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol in order to prepare you for a fight against stress.

What you’re feeling at the moment causes reactions like blood being redirected to muscles and body functions shutting down like digestion. Your heart starts pounding and you’re breathing faster than you normally do. Stress boosts both your energy and adrenaline.

And if you stick in this condition for long periods, it can affect your overall health with an increase in blood pressure and sugar levels. And also, a decrease in your sexual appetite.

Healthy Ways to Deal with Stress

If you’re feeling stressed, don’t worry because there are plenty of ways to deal with stress. However, there are a couple options that will help you deal with stress as well as you possibly can:

Know that Stress Doesn’t Last Forever – In order to deal with stress, you have to accept that it’s an unavoidable part of life but also something that will pass with time. Instead of overthinking the problems, look for solutions. Move forward. Don’t let your past or current problems define your future.

Keep a Positive Attitude when You’re Stressed – If you’re a mentally strong person, you already know that keeping a positive attitude in a negative situation is one of the keys to overcoming it or solving it. Instead of assuming all the bad things that might go wrong, trust in a positive outcome. You learn something new out of every failure or stressful situation. Look at the bright side. It sounds cliché but it’s a very healthy way to cope with stress. Your mind is very powerful. Try to clear it of negative thoughts as much as possible!

Improve Your Mental and Physical Health – Mentally strong people know that when stressed, they have to give their best to get out of the situation that’s making them feel uncomfortable, unproductive or bad about themselves. So, when stressed, focus on improving yourself. Visit the gym and improve your diet. Take care of your overall health, focus on yourself and not on your stress.

Find Balance in Your Life – If you’re one of those people who keep a schedule that’s full of social activities, it might be time for a change. Instead of hanging around with people and doing stuff to avoid issues and dealing with them, try to find balance between your social life and solitude.

Find time to gather your thoughts and deal with stress, instead of avoiding it. However, don’t completely withdraw from people but spend more alone time with your thoughts and feelings.

Mentally unstable people surround themselves with people and unimportant ‘issues’ just to avoid dealing with their problems. Find the perfect balance to help you manage stress.

Understand that You’re in Control – If you feel like you’re a victim of bad circumstances, think again. Sometimes, it might be true. But most times, we decide how things or people affect us. So, if you’re stressed and you secretly know it’s your fault, acknowledge your choices, and realize that the only person to blame is yourself. And don’t blame yourself but forgive yourself and move on. It’s not the end of the world!

Regain Control of Your Stress – Whether it’s listening to your favorite song or walking the dog in the park after work. Or maybe you enjoy taking a long relaxing bath. It’s most helpful to turn to what brings you the most joy when feeling stressed. It won’t make the stress go away but it will make you feel like you’re in control of your life. If you have a certain level of joy and comfort it will help you feel – and remember – that you’re in charge of your life.

Focus on Other Things – If you’re stressed, focusing on things that can distract you for a while can be helpful. We’re not suggesting that you run away from your problems. However, doing something that you enjoy can help you clear your mind and relieve stress. Knitting, sewing, playing music, playing video games, cooking, doing your makeup, or reading a book is an ideal way to escape negative thoughts, relieve stress, and open your mind to creative solutions.

Start Practicing Meditation or Yoga – Cliché; we know. But it seriously does help. Meditation, yoga or some other activity can distract you and help relieve stress in a healthy way. Go someplace quiet. Transport yourself somewhere nice by closing your eyes and focusing your breathing. Do this every day for 5 minutes when you’re feeling stressed and you will definitely notice an increased level of calmness.
