Cumin is an ancient spice. It was used by the Greek and Romans in ancient times in everything from home remedies to religious ceremonies. In the Middle Ages, cumin became a popular spice in Europe, Britain, North Africa, India and the Middle East.

Cumin has since risen in popularity in the United States, where it was introduced and is still commonly used in Latin American, Mexican and Indian dishes.

Cumin originally comes in whole seeds, which can be used in recipes. The seeds are generally a small rectangle shape and brown in color. Cumin seeds release their aroma when they’re added to oil or butter and heated.

Does cumin go bad?

While cumin doesn’t go bad, it may lose flavor over time. You may find that your cumin doesn’t seem to be as flavorful as it was when you purchased it. If so, you can add the cumin to other spices that will add additional flavors, or purchase a fresher bottle.

How should cumin be stored?

Cumin should be kept in an airtight container and stored in a cool, dark place. It’s important to keep cumin away from potentially damp conditions or from excessive heat. Damp conditions with cake the product. Heat will cause cumin to lose its flavor.
